New York and Newspeak: George Orwell's 1984 comes to Broadway

New York City seems more than ready to embrace a dramatized version of George Orwell's 1949 ominous novel, 1984, and we'll only have to wait until the summer to do so. Scheduled to open on June 22, the Broadway production, created for stage by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, will take place at the Hudson Theatre.  1984 tells the story of Winston Smith, a conflicted employee of the "Ministry of Truth," creating propaganda and falsifying history in order to appease the totalitarian government which not only controls actions but attempts to control thoughts.  The play has had a successful run in England, and no doubt will find a very fitting home, at a very fitting time, in the United States.
